My Graph for the 3-Set Dance Band
As a Live Music Producer you’d think I’d be used to it. But I am always amazed at how many kinds of music there are and how many ways musicians and performers make a living in the live music industry.
For instance, did you know that in the Grammy awards last month they gave awards for 29 fields of music (pop, rap, rock, etc.), and that there were 78 categories within those fields?
The diversity is mind-boggling. And yet, it doesn’t matter what genre the artist plays, whether they play their own original music or covers, or if they play for 3 minutes or 3 hours. Because every artist plays for an audience that expects to be captured and engaged, experience moments, and be changed.
So I’m glad to get questions like the following one from an artist in Canada:
Q: I play in a dance/party band that does three 1-hour sets every night. Does your teaching apply to what we do? Or is it just for concerts and bands that do their own songs?
